 In a dramatic statement before the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) declared, "When history calls, history calls," and announced her support of a nearly $1 trillion government-run health care plan supported by Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus. Snowe joined with every other Democrat on the committee in support the plan that will create a government-funded nonprofit "cooperative" to provide health care to tens of millions of Americans and will slash Medicare spending by hundreds of millions of dollars. Snowe's support as well as the support of a number of so-called "moderate" Democrat Senators makes it more likely that Congress will pass a massive health-care bill this year.
NSC Executive Director Leslie Anderson called the vote "a shameful day in U.S. Senate history that America's senior-citizens will remember for many years to come."
The Senate committee voted 14-9 with every single Democrat including Senator Ben Nelson of Florida casting votes for the mammoth bill. The bill must now be reconciled with an even more expensive bill passed earlier this year by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee before it goes before the full Senate for a vote.
